Membership staff have the responsibility of recording, registering and reporting on the demographics of the Dokis First Nation membership. In addition to filing forms for birth, marriage and death, staff also assist Dokis First Nation members with wills, estates, powers of attorney and living wills. Finally, the Membership staff section includes Address Updates, Estates, Gas Cards and Status Cards.

Mailing Lists

Dokis First Nation retains mailing lists of Dokis First Nation members for the purpose of communicating with the membership. It is your responsibility to ensure that your address is updated with our office.

HOW DO YOU REPORT THE DEATH OF A REGISTERED FAMILY MEMBER?

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE INFORMATION IN THE INDIAN REGISTER BE CORRECT AND UP-TO-DATE.

PLEASE ENSURE TO DO YOUR PART IN REPORTING THE DEATH OF A REGISTERED FAMILY MEMBER BY:

STEP 1:  Contacting Dokis First Nation Membership Dept.

OR

STEP 2:  Contact any Indigenous Services Canada Office in Ontario. (SEE LIST OF LOCATIONS)

STEP 3:  Provide any of the following documents:

ORIGINAL DEATH CERTIFICATE

VITAL STATISTICS DEATH RECORD OR EXTRACT

STEP 4:  If available, also provide the Deceased family members’ Status Card when reporting a death. 

Estate Regulations

  • According to Federal Rules/ Estate Regulations in accordance with the Indian Act, a copy of the Will is no longer required as only a Death Certificate and copy of Appointment of Executor/Administrator is required (due to Privacy laws) for the Executor/Administrator to act on behalf of the Estate.

What should you do when a family member or a friend dies?

If a First Nations person was living off a reserve at the time of death, the estate is the responsibility of the province, territory or country where they lived.   Follow this link to Indigenous Services Canada to find out more info regarding each province.
